
Causes of Neutropenia
Inherited
- Kostmann’s Syndrome and less severe neutropenia.
Acquired
- Drug Induced
- Anti-inflammatory drugs – aminopyrine, phenylbutazone, salazopyrine
- Anti-bacterial drugs – chloramphenicol, co-trimoxazole, sulfasalazine, penicillins
- Anticonvulsants – phenytoin, carbamazepine
- Antithyroids – carbimazole
- Phenothiazines – chlorpromazine, thioridazine
- Psychotropics and antidepressants – clozapine, mianserin, imipramine
- Many others including – gold, penicillamine, mepacrine, amodiaquine, ticlopidine, tolbutamide
- Cytotoxic Agents
- Nutritional Deficiency
- B12, folate, especially alcoholics
- Infection
- Any severe infection, many viral infections, Typhoid, TB, Malaria, HIV.
- Immune Modulated
- Autoimmune, SLE, Rheumatoid arthritis, Anaphylaxis
- Splenomegaly
- Large Granular Lymphocytic Leukaemia
*Some of the causes here may cause a pancytopenia.
