
Neutropenia

- Neutropenia can be congenital or acquired.
- Drugs are commonly suspected to be the cause of neutropenia.
- The normal lower level of neutrophils is influenced by a person's race. The widely accepted lower level of 2 x 109/L is appropriate for Caucasians, but levels of 1.5 x 109/L or even lower may be normal for African Americans and some Jewish groups.
- Neutropenia and antipsychotic medication. This has been a significant problem in recent years. The newer antipsychotic agents include risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, and clozapine. Refer to the Data Sheets on Medsafe.
