Other Causes of Megaloblastic Anaemia
In these situations, the appearances of blood and marrow may be identical to that seen in B12 or folate deficiency. Causes include:
- Cytotoxic agents – azathioprine, methotrexate, hydroxyurea, etc.
- Other drugs - including anticonvulsants, zidovudine therapy for HIV, and nitrous oxide.
- In myelodysplasia and occasionally in AML, megaloblastic erythropoiesis may be seen.
