
Definition
Haemochromatosis means the clinical expression of iron induced tissue injury. It may be hereditary or acquired and the various causes are listed below.
Classification of Hereditary and Secondary Causes of Haemochromatosis
Hereditary Causes
- Classical haemochromatosis (hereditary haemochromatosis (Type I)
- Juvenile haemochromatosis (Type 2)
- Chromosome 1q-linked
- Abnormality of hepcidin
- Transferrin receptor-2 deficiency (Type 3)
- Ferroportin deficiency (includes some cases of African iron overload (Type 4)
- African iron overload
Secondary Causes
- Hereditary disorders
- Pyruvate kinase deficiency
- Dyserythropoietic anaemia
- Hereditary spherocytosis
- Sideroblastic anaemia (ALA-S deficiency)
- Acquired disorders
- Sideroblastic and other dyserythropoietic anaemias
- Any anaemia, except for that resulting from blood loss, in which multiple transfusions are required.
