Safe Eating and Low Immunity Diet Guidelines
See also the CDHB Safe Eating and Low Immunity Diet Guidelines.
The Safe Eating and Low Immunity Diet should be followed by patients undergoing intensive chemotherapy or a stem cell transplant when intermittent neutropenia will occur:
- Patients undergoing intensive chemotherapy should follow the safe eating and low immunity diet until they have finished treatment. The diet should be maintained between cycles of chemotherapy.
- Patients undergoing an autologous transplant should follow the safe eating and low immunity diet for 6 weeks from the day of transplantation.
- Patients undergoing an allogeneic transplant should follow the safe eating and low immunity diet for 12 weeks from the day of transplantation, or longer if there is significant GvHD.
Patients can return to their normal diet when they have finished all planned treatment and neutrophil levels are greater than 0.5 x 109/L consistently for at least one week.
