Laxatives
Use of stimulant laxatives in neutropenic patients:
- Constipation is to be avoided in neutropenic patients to reduce the risk of causing anal fissures or exacerbating haemorrhoids.
- Stimulant laxatives are best avoided because of the possible increase in risk of bowel perforation.
- Osmotic laxatives are preferred (lactulose 10-150 mL daily in divided doses, movicol). Ensure adequate fluid intake.
- Bulking agents can also be used (Konsyl D - psyllium husk).
- Docusate is a stool softener but probably also has stimulant properties.
- Enemas are not used in neutropenic patients.
