Doctors Referring Patients to B6
Good communication is important when admitting patients to the B6. Please observe the following checklist:
- During the ordinary weekday, ring the Ward Registrar (ext. 80660 or pager 8191) who, liaising with the nurse in charge, will admit the patient to the B6 if a bed is available.
- If there is no bed available the Ward Registrar will arrange for the patient to go to ED (ext. 80270), who will call the Registrar for admission when the patient arrives and has been stabilised.
- After hours until 2300, ring Duty House Surgeon 1 through the hospital switchboard (364 0640) and give all patient details, their problem and the action required/expected.
- After 2300 ring the Clinical Team Coordinator through the hospital switchboard (364 0640) and give all patient details, their problem and the action required/expected.
Assessment of New Admissions to B6
Please observe the following:
- Has a referral letter indicating the reasons for admission and the recommended course of action been received?
- Check MRSA status before the patient arrives on the ward.
- Patients with MRSA, influenza, varicella zoster, or active TB should not be placed on the B6. Discuss with Haematology Consultant.
- Clerk the patient in to the ward. Ensure that a summary of previous admissions, treatments, and complications is made.
Registrar to discuss with the Consultant re the immediate management unless this is obvious.
Note: Transfer of patients from other hospitals. The patient Flow Manager/Duty Manager must be contacted before any transfer patient is accepted, to ensure that a bed is available. Haematology patients requiring surgery should in general be admitted the day before surgery.
Laboratory Results
- These are presented on Health Connect South. No hard copies of the results are issued.
- The Ward Registrar and House Officer should work together to daily view, accept, and take appropriate action on results from patients in the B6.
- Refer to the Health Connect South and Éclair training packages on the intranet.
