
Palliative Care
Patients with end stage disease often have multiple and disabling symptoms, and survival is usually a matter of a few weeks.
- Bone pain and CNS symptoms are often difficult to manage.
- Low dose chemotherapy aiming to control symptoms but avoiding drug toxicity is a principle of management at this time.
- Steroids, vincristine, low dose cyclophosphamide and even local radiotherapy may all produce symptom improvement.
- The patient will usually have clear ideas as to what sort of treatment they feel is appropriate.
- Involvement of the Palliative Care Team is essential.
